Chantal Joffe

Chantal Joffe paints visceral portraits of women and children, derived from a variety of sources from the family photo to magazine advertisements and pornographic models. Their fluid and directly expressive rendering flirts with caricature but somehow has the effect of filling her subjects with personality. The images possess a menacing humour and are highly enjoyable and strangely confrontational.
